Story Behind the Cookies
I decided to make these best monster cookies for the 4th of July, and in my humble opinion, they turned out AMAZING! Everyone absolutely LOVED them. They were packed with protein and bursting with amazing flavor.
I wanted to make these cookies even more protein-packed beyond just the peanut butter, so I decided to add French vanilla protein powder to the batter. Oh my goodness, they turned out amazing! 😋 You don’t have to add it, but I highly recommend it! 😉
For the M&Ms, I couldn’t find a bag of red, white, and blue ones, so I bought a big bag of the regular colors and picked out the blue and red candies. I added them to the top of each cookie, along with a few extra white chocolate chips, to get that perfect red, white, and blue look.
Here’s a tip: I discovered that the M&Ms cracked when baked. To keep them looking perfect on top of the cookies, wait until the cookies are done baking, and then gently press the “staged” M&Ms into the top. Happy baking!
Monster Cookie Ingredients
- 2 1/4 Cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1 Cup Light Brown Sugar, Packed
- 3/4 Cup Unsalted Butter
- 1 Cup M&M Candies
- 1 Egg
- 1/2 Cup Peanut Butter
- 3/4 Cup Oats
- 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
- 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda
- 2 Teaspoons Vanilla
- 1/2 Cup White Chocolate Chips
- 3/4 Cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunks
- 1/4 Cup Vanilla Protein Powder- Optional
- 1 Tablespoon Water- Only Add if Protein Powder is Added
How to Make Monster Cookies from Scratch
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. The baking time for the cookies will be about 9 minutes.
- Blend the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar with a hand or stand mixer until well incorporated.
- Add the peanut butter and mix again until blended.
- Mix in the egg, salt, flour, baking soda, vanilla, oats, protein powder, and water until combined and a thick cookie batter is formed.
- Fold in the white chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, and M&Ms into the batter.
- Roll the cookies into balls, about two tablespoons in size, and place them on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.
- Tip- Add extra M&Ms to the top of each cookie so that the colors of the candies stand out. Or, hold off adding the M&M’s until after the baking is done, and then press immediately into the hot cookies after taking them out of the oven. This will help prevent the M&M’s from cracking.
- Bake on the middle rack for 9 minutes, or until the cookies are slightly golden brown around the edges, but still soft in the center. Let them cool before moving them to a platter.
Where to Find Special Colored M&M’s
As you may have noticed, M&Ms often come out with holiday-themed colors to match the season. However, they’re not always easy to find. In light of the 4th of July the only festive colored candies I could find locally, were at Target, and they were peanut M&Ms, which were too big for these monster cookies.
I’d recommend calling your local retail and grocery stores if you need specific colors for a holiday or celebration. For what it’s worth, I’ve tried the off-brand M&M-type candies from Walmart, and they just don’t taste as good. You want your cookies to be delicious, and authentic M&Ms are the way to go.
Here’s a Tip: If you have a bit of extra time and can wait for shipping, you can order them on Amazon.
Here’s a peek at my 4th of July Monster Cookies. ❤🤍💙 They turned out AMAZINGLY delicious, super festive, and oh-so-cute! I just wish I had waited to add the M&Ms on top, after baking, to keep them from cracking. 😉
