Spinach balls have been a staple food that our family has enjoyed for the past 30 years. My mom had an old family friend who liked to share secret Italian recipes. So, yes, I’m officially letting the cat out of the bag with this reveal; with permission of course. Lol!
All the years growing up, my sister, Dianna, was usually the culprit who insisted that my mom make this easy spinach balls recipe for holidays, parties, and just about every other day of the year. We had to reign in her cravings a bit. It’s no wonder that Dianna is usually the one to carry on the tradition of making this recipe for the holidays. Except for this year! I decided to make them for Thanksgiving and, oh man, were they ever amazing.

Easy Recipe to Make Ahead of Time
If you are in need of a quick and easy appetizer for your next gathering, and want to make some of the food you are serving ahead of time, this spinach balls recipe is super versatile and able to store away for a later day. They can be easily frozen or kept cool in the fridge until you are ready to reheat them at the time of your get-together.
Either way, just crank up the oven to 350°, place on a cookie sheet, and warm up for about 10 minutes. They are very forgiving, so if you warm them up a little longer, it won’t hurt, just make sure they don’t get a “sun burn” from being in the oven too long.
Spinach Balls Ingredients
- 2- 10 Ounce Packages Frozen Spinach
- 1 Cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
- 4 Beaten Eggs
- 6 Ounce Box Stuffing Mix (I prefer the cornbread version)
- 3/4 Stick of Butter- Melted
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350° and bake for 15-20 minutes.
Bake stuffing according to box directions. Place spinach in a pot of water and boil until cooked. Then squeeze out as much of the liquid as possible. Use a strainer or cheesecloth to get ALL of the water out. This will allow the spinach balls to have a rounder look. Otherwise, drain using the press of your hands and make it into more of a “patty” shape. Again, very forgiving, and either way you style them, they will have the same taste of deliciousness.
Combine spinach, cooked dressing, parmesan cheese, butter, and eggs. Mix with your hands until the ingredients are well incorporated. Scoop balls/patties using an ice cream scoop, or your hands, and form them into round shapes. Place on a cookie sheet and back for 15-20 minutes until lightly golden brown. (I like to use silicone cookie sheet covers to easily remove the spinach balls from the pan.) If not, use parchment paper, or spray the pan before baking. Serve while warm. Bon’ Appetite!
Secretly Get in those Veggies
These spinach balls are a game changer when it comes to getting your little ones to eat their vegetables. Adults, too! As a mom, I’m always looking for ways I can sneak vegetables into my girl’s diets.
You can add shredded zucchini to this recipe to mix in extra nutrients. Other foods you can add, chopped very small, include:
- Onion
- Garlic- crushed
- Artichoke
- Sausage
- Peppers
- Bonus Non-Veggie Ingredient- Feta Cheese
Make this recipe your own by adding in the goodies you know your family will love.
Spinach Balls Recipe Gluten Free
If you have a gluten sensitivity and still desire to make this recipe, all you need to do is substitute the stuffing mix. Make sure it’s gluten free and you are good to go. All of the other ingredients are naturally gluten free.
Dairy Free Version of Spinach Balls
I’m so thankful the grocery stores have dairy free versions of cheeses you can use to substitute almost any dairy ingredient. In order to make this one dairy free, use a butter such as ghee, and an alternative parmesan “cheese” made from almonds or coconut. I personally haven’t tried this recipe with cheese alternatives, but I have tried various kinds of dairy free cheeses. Many of them are delicious and you probably wouldn’t taste the difference in a recipe.
One time I put dairy free cheese shreds on my girls tacos and they said it was the best taco they ever had. Might be worth a try!

P.S. A Note of Encouragement
He first loved us. God is the one who loved you and me, first. We are able to give the love He gave to us, back to Him, and to others, the more we are able to receive it. Have you ever intentionally sat quietly and asked to receive more of God’s love? If LOVE is something you feel like you are lacking and in need of, you can have more in your life. All you have to do is intentionally sit before the most perfect Father, who loves you completely with faults and all, and receive it.
When you sit in this quiet place, tell Him what you need. Tell Him you want more of His love. He will give it to you. You know the phrase, “You are what you eat?” The same concept goes for the saying, “You are what you behold” or “You are the company you keep.” When you behold Perfect Love, you become more like the One who is perfect love.
Spending time in God’s “company” will allow you to receive His love. You have no idea what you can do in this life, or what you can conquer, or who you can be, if you just get more of the love of God in your heart. I believe and declare, you will move mountains! It will make you more like Him and allow you to greatly influence those around you with God’s great love and kindness.
