How to Make Cake Pops
*Makes About 30 Cake Pops Depending on the Ball Sizes
1. A Great Cake Foundation
At the heart of every cake pop lies a moist and flavorful cake. For these s’mores cake pops, you can opt for a basic chocolate cake as the base. Bake your favorite chocolate cake recipe (here is our favorite), or for added convenience, use a store-bought cake mix. Once the cake is baked, mush together while it’s still warm/hot using your hands or a blender. Wear rubber gloves if you use your hands to protect them from the warmth. The steam from the heat will give the cake balls added moisture. The cake crumbles should have a texture similar to that of damp sand.
2. Add Melted Chocolate
Next, add the 1/2 cup melted chocolate chips to the cake crumbles and mix. This gives one more layer of moisture needed to create soft and moist s’more cake pops.
3. Roll the Cake into Golf Ball Size Balls
Take a small amount of the cake crumbles mixture and roll it between your palms to form a smooth golf-ball sized ball. Repeat rolling until all the cake mixture is used. Place the cake pop balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and set in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Chilling helps the cake pops maintain their shape during the dipping process.
4. Dip the Sticks into Melted Chocolate and Freeze
Then, dip the sticks into melted chocolate chips and place them inside each cake ball, about halfway through. You want just a bit of chocolate on the stick to prevent a large pool of chocolate from puddling on top when submerged. If this happens, smooth out the chocolate with your finger or a knife. Then, place in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to harden.
5. Dip into Melted White Chocolate, Freeze, and Decorate
Now comes the fun part for the cake pops designs- dipping the cake pops in white chocolate and decorating them with melted semi-sweet chocolate chips, marshmallows, and mini cinnamon squares.
Melt white candy chocolate in the microwave according to the instructions on the package. Remove the cake pops from the freezer, and carefully dip each cake pop into the melted chocolate, making sure the entire ball is coated.
To make this cake pops recipe easy, place the cake pops upside-down to harden. We will be topping them with melted chocolate, marshmallows, and graham-like cereal, so there is no need to have perfectly rounded pop tops for this cake pops recipe. Place in the freezer for 15 minutes.
Once the white chocolate is hardened, place each pop in the holder you want to display them in. Feel free to click here to check out the one we found on Amazon. Melt more chocolate chips, pour into a piping bag, and drizzle over the top of each cake pop to mimic a melting ice-cream cone.
Add a few pieces of your favorite cinnamon square cereal into the melted chocolate topping, and then cut mini marshmallows into 4ths and place next to the cereal squares on top. Put back in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to allow the melted chocolate to harden. Take out and bon appetit!
Cake Pop Tips and Tricks
- Mash up the cake while it’s still very warm. Allow it to cool a bit so you don’t burn your fingers. Wear rubber gloves to add another layer of protection to your hands. Or use an electric mixer.
- If a ball splits when adding the stick, remove the post and mash it again. Then repeat the rolling process. The extra bit of melted chocolate will make the ball more pliable. Don’t forget to wipe the stick off before you dip it back into the melted chocolate.
- When dipping the cake pops into the melted chocolate, if they fall off the stick, do not fret. Keep an eye on where the hole was and continue to cover the pop in white chocolate. Wipe off the stick and add it again to the cake pop. The melted chocolate over the hole will be enough to enter the ball and secure the stick. You can scoop out the cake pop with the stick intact, or use a spoon.
- When removing the cake pop from the melted white chocolate, scrape on the side of the cup/bowl to help prevent the chocolate from pooling. I prefer to have a “drip station” where I place the cake pops on parchment paper to remove more pooled chocolate, for just a few seconds. Then, I pick it up and place it on another clean parchment paper to fully dry.
