Easy Southern Baked Beans Ingredients
- 1/2 Pound Ground Beef
- 1/2 Pound Bacon
- 1 Green Pepper
- 1 Yellow Onion
- 2 Cans Pork and Beans (16oz)
- 1/2 Bottle of ANY Smoked Barbecue Sauce (18oz) (we like to use Stubbs Smokey Mesquite or Open Pit Smoked Flavor)
- 1/2 Teaspoon Chili Powder or More to Taste
- 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Maple Syrup (or less if wanting less sweetness)
- 15 Ounces Crushed Pineapple
How to Make Baked Beans, Mississippi Style Recipe
Cut up the bacon, green pepper, and onion into tiny bite-size pieces. Then place in a pot and brown the beef and bacon together, along with the cut-up onions and peppers, until softened. Tip– You don’t want the bacon to become crispy, so tiny cut-up pieces are best.
Once that is browned and softened, add the pork and beans, barbecue sauce, chili powder, brown sugar, maple syrup, and crushed pineapple, and let it cook on the stovetop on low heat for about an hour or until it thickens.
This recipe has a sweet and salty taste. If you prefer it to be less sweet, start by adding 1/4 of a cup of maple syrup instead of the 1/2 cup it calls for. Give it a taste and see if it has the right amount of sweetness for you.
