1. Adding Neutral Tones
Adding colors and shades from a more neutral color palette during the winter season is a warm and welcome change, providing a soothing contrast to the bright lights, glitz, and glamour of the Christmas season.
Neutral tones like beige, cream, winter white, tan, gray, brown, and black can complement virtually any style. They can also help you incorporate a color scheme inspired by the natural beauty of the great outdoors, which is especially appealing if you reside in a colder winter climate.
Even if you live in warmer winter weather (this is the time of year when I don’t particularly enjoy living in the Mitten, but I’m learning how to embrace it 😜), feel free to incorporate those serene and simple hues into your winter tablescape. This can help create a cozier atmosphere during the plain-Jane months of the year.
2. Winter Tablescape Ideas- Incorporate Outdoor Elements
Pine trees become the shining stars of the season in the great outdoors once the leaves from the deciduous trees lose their coverage. One fantastic winter tablescape idea is to incorporate bits and pieces of them into your dining table décor.
You can create winter wonderland table centerpieces with a cluster of small faux pine trees delicately arranged in the center of your table, or add a few pine sprigs to your winter floral centerpieces to infuse the blooms with the season’s ambiance.
If you’re feeling crafty and want to take a more DIY approach to your winter tablescapes, you can gather pine greens from outside and tuck them into your napkin rings. Another idea is to use freshly picked pine cones and acorns as charming yet simple winter table decorations.
3. Add Candle Ambiance
Incorporating candles of all shapes and sizes will instantly transform your winter tablescape decorations, creating a wonderfully cozy ambiance.
I absolutely adore these My Texas House candle holders from Walmart. They feature gold mercury glass detailing inside their frosted gray glass shell, which imparts a warm and inviting glow to the candles.
Here are more ways you can add candles to your winter dining room table décor.
- Arrange pillar candles in clusters inside a hurricane vase to create a beautiful centerpiece. For more inspiration, click here.
- Place neutral-colored candlesticks in elegant silver or gold holders along the center of your table.
- Add shorter pinecone shaped votives or other beautifully coordinating small candle holders where your table has empty space or could use a touch of warmth.
4. Winter Themed Table Décor- Add Soup Bowls
I know it’s a simple idea, but since fall and winter are the perfect times to make delicious homemade soups, why not add soup bowls to your dinner and salad plate ensemble? It’s an ideal way to start your dinner by offering your guests a comforting dish that will satisfy their cravings.
Your soup bowls don’t have to match your other dinnerware pieces, but they should complement the colors you’ve chosen.
For example, you can have a creamy white dinner plate as the base, followed by a black or gray accent/salad plate, and then topped with a creamy white soup bowl.
Arrange your dinnerware in a way that brings joy to your heart. You can use what you have, go for budget-friendly options like Dollar Tree or Ollies, or even borrow some classic pieces from your friends’ cabinets.
Design with your heart, and you’ll see your dinner party experience come to life. Soup and all! 😉
5. Winter Tablescape Ideas- Layers of Texture
Whether you follow trends in fashion or home décor, the winter season always brings an abundance of texture in both areas. Incorporating texture into your winter dining room table décor will infuse the cozy ambiance of the season and make your tablescape stand out.
Many times, the reason your eyes are drawn to certain styles, décor pieces, and even tablescape layouts is because of the amount of texture in the design.
As you can see in the winter tablescape we’re showcasing, you have the foundational texture starting with a linen tablecloth, adorned with a thick woven table runner.
Next, you notice the glossy texture of the dinnerware, water goblets, and clear votive holders.
The centerpiece comes to life with natural wooden textures from the tiered serving stand, alongside the pine cones and faux pine trees.
The frosted candle holders are the delightful embellishments that remind me of the perfect pair of earrings to complement an outfit. They contribute just the right amount of sparkle and a glistening glow to the dinner table’s ambiance.
Bonus Tip!
Incorporating food as winter table décor, will ALWAYS take your tablescape to the next level. And, make it oh-so-cozy and inviting for your guests. 😋
As you can see, we made an apple and pear gallate and a mini charcuterie board (smoked gouda cheese, brazil nuts, and red grapes) and staged them on a tiered platter as the centerpiece. Then, added the most delicious creamy chicken wild rice soup to the bread bowls at each place setting. Talk about delicious!
