It all started with my daughter’s unicorn birthday theme which led me to explore unicorn party food recipes. With popcorn being such a fabulously favorite snack food, I decided to come up with a super fast and easy unicorn popcorn recipe to share with you. Time-saving was crucial for other party preparations, but at the same time, I really wanted the treats in the party bags to complement the theme. 😉
This recipe is not only adorable with festive bursts of unicorn colors, but it is also THE BOMB in terms of delicious flavor. If your guests enjoy popcorn and chocolate, this combination is definitely worth trying.

How to Make Unicorn Popcorn
Unicorn Popcorn Ingredients
*Fills 12-13 Cellophane Treat Bags, Halfway*
- 1 Cup Popcorn Seeds or 8 Heaping Cups Homemade Popcorn (use very little oil and do not include seasonings)
- 16-Ounce Package White Chocolate Candy Coating (or you can use the white disks)
- 12-Ounce bag of Pink Candy Melts Disks
- 12-Ounce bag of Blue Candy Melts Disks
- 3.1-Ounce Bag Lucky Charms (found at Dollar Tree)
- Heart Shaped Marshmallows (Found at Dollar Tree)
- Dot sprinkles
- Line sprinkles
- Parchment paper is needed so the popcorn mixture doesn’t stick to the pans.
Instructions
- Pop homemade popcorn according to the package directions. Fresh popcorn tastes best, but if in a time pinch, you can use Skinny Pop as an alternative. Just ensure that the popcorn doesn’t have a lot of oil or butter so the chocolate can stick.
- Spread the popped popcorn out on two, parchment-lined, cookie sheet trays.
- Melt the white chocolate according to the package directions and drizzle it over the popcorn using a spoon.
- Melt the blue candy disks according to package directions and drizzle them over the popcorn using a spoon.
- Sprinkle marshmallows, Lucky Charms cereal, and colorful sprinkles on top of the white and blue melted chocolate.
- Melt the pink candy disks according to package directions and drizzle on top of the unicorn popcorn mixture to create another layer of “glue” to help hold the sprinkles and marshmallows in place.
- Allow the popcorn mixture to fully dry before breaking it apart and placing it in your containers, bags, or bowl.
- Pour it into a pretty bowl that coordinates with your party décor or add it to festive treat bags for the most adorable and tasty party favors.
Unicorn Popcorn with White Chocolate “Tip“
When preparing this unicorn popcorn batch, I drizzled candy/white chocolate over the popcorn and let it dry on top. This resulted in a bark-like consistency, with the kernels sticking together from the top layer of sticky chocolate.
You can alternatively pour your melted colored chocolate into a bowl, dump your popcorn in, and mix thoroughly so each of the popcorn “flakes” are covered. Keep in mind, that this method may require more chocolate to fully cover all the popcorn and a bit more time.
If you want to go the fast route, my suggestion is to drizzle the chocolate over the top. Enjoy the delectable blend of chocolate and popcorn in each bite—offering the best of both worlds with a tad less sugar. 😉
FAQs
What is Unicorn Popcorn Made Of?
Unicorn popcorn is a special snack mix typically made for a little one’s birthday. It’s infused with ingredients such as fresh popcorn, melted colorful chocolates, frosted animal cookies, cereal, sprinkles, and marshmallows. You can also add in bugles, rice or corn Chex cereals, other colorful candies and marshmallows, food coloring sprays, edible glitter, and flavorings such as vanilla or cotton candy. All of these additions will take your rainbow unicorn popcorn to the next level.
Can I Add Food Coloring to Popcorn?
Although I haven’t personally tried adding food coloring to popcorn, experts suggest it can be added after popping. Melt butter or coconut oil, add food coloring, and pour the mixture over your popped treat.
